BCL ‘set sail’ at the £35 Million Mary Rose Museum

BCL have begun installation of the timber panel system for the external façade at the new Mary Rose Museum, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Designed by Wilkinson Eyre, the new £35 million visitor centre is one of the most significant and ambitious heritage projects in recent years. It will provide a unique state-of-the-art environment in which to view the 16th century warship, whilst also enabling the conservation conditions necessary for its ongoing maintenance.

The complex elliptical geometry of the building has been designed to represent a modern interpretation of The Mary Rose itself and will be delivered using BCL ‘random width’ Western Red Cedar panels, stained black, fixed using BCL’s proprietary fixing systems to the steel frame substrate. BCL are currently on track for completion in November, watch this space for more updates on our progress…

BCL begin manufacture for state-of-the-art £25 Million Bilston Academy

The new building for South Wolverhampton & Bilston Academy has begun construction and BCL have now completed all detail design and panel layouts, to begin manufacture of over 2,500 sqm of external timber panels for the building’s façade.

The £25 Million project, delivered through the BSF programme by Carillion PLC will provide dynamic multi-use teaching facilities for over 1200 students from the surrounding area. Designed by Capita, the 10,000 sqm space will comprise of 4 differently themed ‘skill zones’, a dedicated engineering hub and science ‘super-lab’ and a combination of grass and astro-turf sports pitches.

The timber panels for the external façade have been chosen to be Siberian Larch for its cost, durability and hard-wearing properties. The design is an open screen effect, with insect mesh behind, which not only produces a striking textured effect, it also cuts down on the amount of timber used, helping to lower costs further.
