As part of the £10.5M refurbishment package undertaken by The University of Plymouth, a new sports hall housing 4 badminton courts and a fitness centre were to be built to meet the requirements of its ever growing 30,000 student population. The inter-spacing of timber slats can present a challenge when trying to achieve aesthetic excellence, especially if one is individually fixing slats on site. Through BCL’s bespoke design service and manufacturing techniques however, this project was able to capitalise on the concealed fixing systems synonymous with BCL and create a striking modern and seamless finish to the building, which would otherwise be unattainable. The pre-fabrication and panelised approach further reduced time on site and helped the contractors meet their goal of delivering the new facilities in time for a fresh intake of students for September 2008.
