Features
The selected timber species for this project is Tatajuba which is a ‘medium-tocoarse’ Brazilian hardwood with excellent durability properties and an attractive yellow/ brown appearance. It was imported into the UK for the project using the Forest Stewardship Council chain of custody accreditation scheme through BCL supply partner Timbmet Silverman.
Schemes such as FSC provide a clear ‘audit trail’ that allows individual
consignments of timber to be traced back to their original source where good forestry practices are confirmed to be in place.
The profi led Tatajuba boards themselves were converted into panels within
individual jigs at BCL Timber Project’s own joinery workshops, a technique developed
by BCL to produce a high degree of dimensional accuracy. In this way an enhanced visual appearance is created, material wastage is kept to an absolute minimum and significant cost and time savings result from the effi ciency of just in time panel deliveries that are phased to meet the demands of the project programme.
BCL Timber Projects designed and installed all aspects of the cladding and detailing
to the facades including the vapour control layer and bespoke aluminium support system, comprising extruded aluminium tee bars and angles on adjustable ‘helpinghand’ brackets to enable fi ne adjustment to both the line and level of each panel at the installation stage.
The versatility of aluminium was fully exploited by the incorporation into the design of two bespoke feature trims as well as a powder coated coping system to the perimeter of the roof.
To complete the effect a high quality black anodised coating was applied to all visible surfaces behind the cladding to minimise their visibility.
